September Mini-Event - Commence the Harvest Festival!

Ponyville had been experiencing a boom of agricultural growth. With Cloudsdale helping to direct the weather, crops had not only grown healthier, but in greater amounts. This was a relief for all, because many a pony had worried about feeding all the hungry this year. Between Cloudsdale, the recovering Crystal Empire, and refugees from the wilds, there were so many more mouths to feed. The realization that the current farming center of Equestria was successful was a cause for celebration.

Bakeries and restaurants flooded with seasonal dishes and flavors. Fruits were mashed and fermented into ciders. Crafters worked with gourds, branches, and bushells from the harvests to make decor and wreaths. By the end of the week, small game stands and booths were set up all along the streets of Ponyville. Some planks had been laid down for a small dance floor by where some local musicians played rustic instruments. And as the sun began to set, candles and lanterns lit up the streets.

Ponies gathered to take part in the festivities. The weather was cool and pleasant, the heat of the summer having faded. As the last light of day disappeared over the horizon, a dark shape flew across the sky with a chorus of squeaks. A huge flock of Fruit Bats came to roost among the town, chittering and delighting in the sounds and smells. For the first time in a long time, there was no tension, no underlying dread. The atmosphere was warm, comforting, and joyous.

Event Prompt: Depict your character taking part in the festivities!

All event entries are due at 11:59PM EST on September 30th!

    August Conclusion: Mystery Solved!

As time passed, it became more and more apparent that something was very odd about the Bovines fighting. Some astute ponies, like Fergus, Coffee Bean, Hunter’s Moon, Pas, Opto, and Flashfloat, noticed some things just weren’t adding up when it came to some of the Bovines involved in the fights. Sometimes the Bovines would even claim later they had no memories of the events! Using what the citizens had gathered, the residing knights investigated further. Finally after one fight, the knights took a cow and bison to the side to question them…only to have what looked like a twin of the bison walk by! And this bison did not have a sibling.

The bison near the guard let out a panicked hiss and with the blink of an eye was replaced by the dark and hole pocked form of a famished changeling! They glowered at them all, their wings beating fiercely. “I told him we needed a better plan!” They grumbled before zipping off out of sight. Both guards gave chase, but lost the changeling in the twists and turns of the caverns.

The knights took the information not only to Sword Dancer, but also to Queen Vespa. The young changeling queen’s expression was briefly one of mortification, though she quickly tried to hide it. Her recent actions in Canterlot were still fresh in everypony’s mind. That wasn’t all of it, though…she was clearly confused when the guards reported the famished had been changing into Bovines. Rather than explain behind closed doors, she squashed her embarrassment and made a public announcement at the center of Sumit’s Hollow.

In front of the crowds and merchants, Queen Vespa perched high and schooled her features. “Every creature, the disruptions at this crucial event, meant to bring us all together, are not what we first thought. It is not just the friction of personalities or opinions, but something more calculated. It seems…famished changelings have been impersonating cow, bison, and yak alike.”

Shock rippled through the crowd, but especially on the faces of hive born changelings.

Queen Vespa did not pause for long. “This is not a simple feat…for those who have lived sequestered in my hive know that we hive-based changelings treat shapeshifting almost as a lost art. We’ve had no need for it in isolation and only a few maintained the skill, more for posterity…but it was only to take on pony forms. This means that these changelings, or at least who is teaching them, must come from outside the hive.”

The whispers and chatter took over for a moment before Vespa silenced them with a lifted wing. “While I cannot explain how they are doing it…I can promise you that we from the hive are committed to helping you discover the answer. I will command my most seasoned shifters to research the issue…and will have some of my kin also try to find the famished responsible. While I’m glad no one was seriously hurt, it is best we remain vigilant in this dangerous world. We will not leave you to face this unusual threat alone.”

From there the crowds disbanded and Queen Vespa went to consult with her changelings. Unsummoned, the three bovine groups gathered in the center of Sumits Hollow. For an awkward moment onlookers thought a new set of arguments might break out…but instead a chuff of laughter broke the tension and the bovines began tapping horns together and bumping shoulders. What started as an awkward resolution evolved into a celebration. Drinks and food were brought out, stomping music full of precision and hooves echoed through the caverns. The changelings had not killed the budding friendship. If nothing else, perhaps it had brought them all together in the end.

August Event Part 1: Conflict Ahoof!

Everypony was relieved when the pandemic in the Crystal Empire settled. Though many questions were still unanswered, the threat had diminished and the recovery of many infected was lifting spirits. The knights were able to leave the Crystal Empire with confidence that the city’s own guard could handle the situation from here.

In the following weeks, the knights were able to stretch out to reach Yakyakistan. The yaks, surprisingly, seemed relatively unphased by the changes in the world. They had always been isolated and refused to let anyone, even wild magic corrupted monsters, push them around. With reluctance they were willing to give a relationship with Equestria a try once more, though it was clear they could change their mind at any moment.

A squadron of knights sent to the south also returned with surprising news. Appleloosa had solidified into a robust settlement. It seems the few remaining ponies had joined up with a herd of refugee cows and the remaining bison in the area when wild magic first appeared. By working together, they had been able carve out a stable existence where all three groups were safe. The town had become almost fort-like, with its buildings and fields a mix of cultures bleeding into one another for the highest level of efficiency.  When the knights came up on them, there was so much excitement it was a bit startling. The settlement was thrilled at the idea of starting trade with Equestria.

With so many new connections being made, the newly revived Merchant’s Guild and the Council of Friendship decided it was the perfect time to hold a Trade Festival. Since Sumit’s Hollow was centrally located, they decided to host the event there. This sent the resident bat ponies into a flurry of activity, as they had never hosted such a large event before. Ponies came from Canterlot, Ponyville, and even the Crystal Empire. Yaks came from Yakyakistan, with ponies, bison, and cows coming from Appleloosa. Even changelings, including Vespa herself, ventured from the Hive.

The first few days of the festival were a rousing success. Sumit’s Hollow was so busy that some ponies even chose to camp outside near Earthquake Canyon. On the third day, however, something strange happened…a cow and a yak were found with horns locked, yelling at each other and literally butting heads. The fight was broken up, but tensions were high. Just a while later, a bison charged after a cow in a rage. The intermingling between groups began to break down. Even the cows and bison, who had come together, were suddenly at odds. No one seemed to know what had started all the commotion. If something wasn’t done soon, though, the Trade Festival might have to end early and fragile new relationships might crumble.

July Event Conclusion - A "Cure" at What Cost?

The bodies of the warped infected began to hunch and shudder. Each let out a wail that would go one to haunt many a pony’s nightmares. Their faces twisted in smoke, before slowly solidifying back into the host’s normal features. One Umbrum near the Crystal Heart remained, fighting the command to retreat. It glared at the numerous ponies who had foiled all attempts for the Crystal Heart’s destruction.

“You haven’t seen the last of us,” Hissed the remaining Umbrum. “We will be free. We will find a way!” The warped infected’s body convulsed the final Umbrum’s features swirled away and dissipated, leaving the infected to collapse in a heap on the ground.

Slowly citizens began to reappear. They came out from their hiding places and helped to pull up the shaken and injured. The lingering fear and uncertainty were palpable, though. Why had the Umbrum stopped? What had made them leave…? Did that mean they could come back at any point…?

In the streets on the border of quarantine Jade Castor appeared with a collection of guards. He looked just as surprised as everypony else…by the looks of things, he had been expecting to need the guards’ assistance. He cleared his throat, mumbling under his breath, before announcing, “We’ve found a…cure of sorts. Please have any infected gather around the Crystal Heart.”

He did not look happy, but he also looked extremely weary and resigned. The cure might not be in the form he wanted, but he was not immune to the immense suffering that had been happening here. There would be time later to stew over why the Umbrum left so abruptly.

After the final Umbrum had fled, Professor Golden Sage entered, followed closely by a handful of timid infected. She seemed surprised by the state of things, but only let it show on her face for a moment. Instead her resolve strengthened and she led the first of the infected with her to the foot of Flurry Heart and the Crystal Heart itself.

She passed a glance at the various ponies who had fought so hard to defend this place. “Thank you for all your hard work. Without the heart, I’m not sure what would have happened…if we’d be able to continue with the solution we’ve found.”

She looked at the infected stallion and nodded her head. “Please…do as we practiced. Let’s not waste time. We have many to teach if this works. Face the Heart and focus…feel the connection you have to it…”

The stallion took a deep breath while staring hard at the Crystal Heart. With one long exhale he closed his eyes and dropped his ears back. He was still for a long time. Many of the surrounding ponies looked at one another, as if silently asking what they were waiting for. Slowly twinkles of light began to glimmer from the inside of the topaz crystals adorning his neck, back, and legs. As the glowing grew stronger, the crystals began to move, shifting against each other like shuddering tiles. Slowly the crystals began to shrink in size before disappearing into fur. Soon the stallion looked almost normal, with a smaller cluster of crystals remaining on his back.

He gasped and began to pant. His legs shook and he blinked rapidly, looking at Golden Sage hopefully. The zebracorn smiled at him, relief leaking into her expression. He laughed then and sat on the floor with tears at the corners of his eyes. It had worked!

Professor Golden Sage turned to the remaining infected she had brought with her and called out, “Come! Channel the Wild Magic flowing within you and regain mastery over your bodies.”

One by one the infected came towards the heart and entered a brief, meditative state. One by one the infected cleared their bodies of crystals either completely or leaving only a few areas with crystals on the surface. Some might say they were being cured, but it was more that each individual was controlling the crystallization now, rather than it running rampant on their bodies.

As the last one finished, Jade Castor entered with a crowd of infected following him. Begrudgingly he dipped his head in Golden Sage’s direction, before going off to the side to observe carefully.

“Come, everyone, I will teach you how to Channel the Wild Magic that has afflicted you…Your Affiliation with the magic of your Empire’s Crystal is the key,” She announced.

And so, over the next few weeks Professor Golden Sage worked with infected across the city. Some found it easy to control the Wild Magic within them, while others struggled or resisted. In time everyone was at least able to control the crystallization enough to stop the infection-like spread. The quarantine boundary was broken down. Families and friends reunited. The triumph, however, was bittersweet. Those who were fully crystallized could not be reached. They had no way of reaching them or Flurry Heart. As a way to mourn together, the city decided to bring all those crystallized to the Heart. There they could all stand together, in the loving presence of their Crystallized princess.

The Empire began to stabilize. Researchers, after resting, began to return to their homes across Equestria. For many this was seen as a solution to the problem. Jade Castor, however, deemed it only a temporary reprieve. He instructed his colleagues to continue research. There had to be a way of ridding ponies of this Wild Magic for good. He would find a way.

    Affinities

Some characters build a connection with Wild Magic and learn to channel it. These relationships to different types of WIld Magic are called Affinities. Different types of Wild Magic connect with characters in different ways. They give characters special abilities and magic. Wild Magic is a bit unpredictable, however, so characters with low Affinity levels will have a harder time successfully channeling it.

There are 5 Affinity levels, each with a higher success rate at channeling the intended Wild Magic.

    • Affinity Level 1: 20% chance of successfully channeling the Wild Magic.
    • Affinity Level 2: 40% chance of successfully channeling the Wild Magic.
    • Affinity Level 3: 60% chance of successfully channeling the Wild Magic.
    • Affinity Level 4: 80% chance of successfully channeling the Wild Magic.
    • Affinity Level 5: 100% chance of successfully channeling the Wild Magic.

To increase your character’s Affinity Level, your character must successfully channel the intended Wild Magic a minimum number of times.

    Affinity Type:

Required Successful Channelings for Advancement: [Link to instances of success here]

All Affinity Level 1’s are acquired based on the type of Wild Magic being channeled. This is the starting or “default” Affinity level for all types of Wild Magic.

    Wild Magic Type

    How To Acquire Affinity

    Earth

Create a piece depicting an interaction with Crystallized Flurry Heart OR create a character using Crystal Talisman.

    Lightning

Create a character using the Cloudsdale Talisman.

    Wind

Create a character using the Cloudsdale Talisman.

    Ice

Create a piece depicting your character communing with the reindeer in the tundra.

    Plant

Create a piece depicting your character communing with a deer in the Everfree Forest.

What are the benefits of Affinities?

    • Allows non-unicorns to use magic.
    • Can be cast without academic study of written spells.
    • Can produce magical features at Affinity levels 3-5. (examples: crystallized horns, fiery manes, etc.)*
    • Can weaken or strengthen individuals in combat.
    • Can produce unusual results or items during events and adventures.

*Earth Wild Magic is the exception…magical features can be shown as early as Affinity Level 1!

How to Use Affinities and Channel Wild Magic

To have your character try channeling Wild Magic, you will roll an Affinity Stat Check based on your character’s Affinity Level.

You always roll an Affinity Stat Check by generating a random number 1-5. What number you need to roll for success depends on your Affinity Level.

    • Affinity Level 1: You must roll a 1 for your character to successfully channel Wild Magic.
    • Affinity Level 2: You must roll 1-2 for your character to successfully channel Wild Magic.
    • Affinity Level 3: You must roll a 1-3 for your character to successfully channel Wild Magic.
    • Affinity Level 4: You must roll a 1-4 for your character to successfully channel Wild Magic.
    • Affinity Level 5: No roll needed, since there is a 100% success rate.

Affinity Stat Checks are completely separate for all other stat checks.

Unlike unicorn magic, all Wild Magic uses WIS Stat Checks to see the power of the magic being channeled.

Example of a Character Action that Channels Wild Magic:

Character A tries to shoot a bolt of lightning at the Timberwolf…they roll an Affinity Stat Check of 2! Since Character A has an Affinity Level of 3, the Wild Magic is channeled successfully! They roll a WIS Stat Check to determine damage.

July Event: In the Shadow of Despair

    Art thumbnail

Despite the guards’ and volunteers’ best efforts, it wasn’t long before everypony knew some of the infected were on the loose. Unease spread throughout the city. Many ponies shut themselves away inside. Even the infected seemed distressed, gathering in crowds around the quarantine barriers. In spite of all their hardships, the infected didn’t want to spread the condition. Not only did it mean more suffering, but it also meant a cure was less likely to be found. The stress of the situation sat heavy over the Crystal Empire like a wet drape. For many, this scenario was the beginning of the end.

Among the crowd of infected, a pony hunched over suddenly, his face obscured by his mane. A hiss came from his figure.

“This despair…it is just what we were waiting for,” came words mingled with a moan.

He lifted his head, revealing that his facial features had morphed into a somewhat skeletal appearance. Smoke billowed from his eyes and his mane took on the same vapor-like form.

“Now is our chance! Destroy the heart! Drown these ponies in despair!’ He shrieked. A few more infected hunched and spasmed. They too revealed changed faces, grinning in only the way a skeleton could.

A handful of the warped infected jumped the fence and dashed toward the heart of the Empire. The rest began to destroy the quarantine barriers and terrorize nearby infected and uninfected alike. The more panicked the ponies became, the more warped infected seem to appear. Guards rushed to engage them, but for every one that met a warped infected in combat, another seemed to stumble in confusion. Their eyes glazed over and suddenly they were lost in a world no one else could see. They would scream and cry, fighting or running from invisible forces or foes. This was more than wild magic at work…this was something much darker at play. And the Crystal Empire was now teetering on the brink of destruction.

    How it Works

You can take 1 action in a thread every time either

    • Two other players (not including NPCs) have acted
    • 24 hours have passed

An “action” consists of the following:

    1. Post of what your character is doing
    2. Moderator stating what Stat Checks need to be made
    3. Your character stating the results of the stat checks and “resolving” that the character attempted to do.

    Example:

Player Post: Pony A tries to kick the warped infected.

Moderator: Roll a DEX Stat Check to see if the kick lands, 5 needed to pass. If passed, roll a CON Stat Check to see how much damage is done, which is rolled number x 10.

Player Post: Pony A rolled a 7 and the kick lands! They do 60 damage!

This is all considered a single “action”. You would then need to wait 24 hours OR until two other players complete actions before posting again.

Players will be awarded prizes and PP based on how their character interacts with this event. This is given out when the event has resolved.

June Event Part 2: Unintended Consequences

During one of their routine patrols, a Crystal Empire guard was pulled aside by an elderly pony. The dismay and discomfort was visible in every frail wrinkle on her face. Without an immediate explanation, she led the guard to the quarantine fence. She pushed aside a long, crooked board to reveal a small hole leading to the other side.

“Forgive me. I had seen the neighbor foals talking through the fence with some of the infected children…I thought it was harmless. The poor little ones in quarantine have it so hard already, I didn’t think it fair to deny them a chance at some friendships…” The elderly pony sounded so defeated. Her glassy eyes watered. “I haven’t seen the foals since this morning and they are usually underhoof. That’s why I thought something might be amiss…I only just found this.”

Immediately the rest of the guard and the knights on hand were summoned. While they tried to keep things quiet, word slowly began to spread among visitors and citizens alike. Some of the infected were loose in the city!

Not only was there risk of the infection spreading, but many worried that ponies might set a panic into motion. This needed to be handled as soon as possible!

Prompt: Some foals have helped some of the infected children escape! You may have your character respond by doing one of the following…

-Find and detain the infected foals. Roll a CON Stat Check to see if your character gets infected (3, 4, or 5 spreads the infection!)
-Find and HIDE the infected foals! Roll a CON Stat Check to see if your character gets infected (3, 4, or 5 spreads the infection!). You must also roll a CHA Stat Check to see if your character is discovered (1-5 has the guards finding your character out!). If discovered, your character will be in jail for 1 week and unable to participate in events until free.
-Help track down the foals who let the infected foals loose.
-Help repair the fence and/or search for more breaches.
-IF INFECTED: Help Professor Golden Sage with her research! She has moved into an area of the quarantine and is trying to study the infection to find a cure.

All entries are due by June 30th, at 11:59PM EST.

You are welcome to continue Aiding the Infected as well.
