    Map of the Known World

As the world is revealed the map will be updated.

Canterlot: The capitol of Equestria and the home of the reigning alicorn Dawn Bringer. A large majority of Equestria's current population lives here. This is also the location of the School of Magic.

Ponyville: One of the other safe locations in Equestria, it hosts the Council of Friendship and the School of Friendship.

The Everfree Forest: Even in the Age of Princesses this forest was full of wild creatures, but now it is a nest of powerful monsters of all kinds. Few dare go here and those that do are often not seen again.

The Bog: Following the river past Ponyville and the Everfree Forest there is a bog filled with creatures and Wild Magic. It is not as dangerous as the forest, but still poses many challenges to those who enter.

Earthquake Canyon: A canyon running from the base of the Unicorn Mountain Range to the edges of the forests outside of Ponyville. It formed after a huge earthquake shook the landscape. Its steep slopes can be dangerous to explore alone.

Sumit's Hollow: A village within the caverns of the Unicorn Mountain Range, this was a refuge for Bat Ponies long before Wild Magic arose. With the surge, however, came the Moon Widow, which trapped the bat ponies for years until an Earthquake created a new entrance. With the help of volunteers, the Moon Widow was defeated and chased from the caverns. Now bat ponies live here peacefully by choice, though they may come and go as they please. Other species are welcome as well, though they may not be a fan of the customary stone stuctures, pony-hair weavings, and honey-berry recipees.

Changeling Hive: This large population of changelings was cut off from the outside world by Wild Magic for a long time. So long, in fact, that the young current ruler, Queen Vespa, had never been outside the hive until recently. While turmoil erupted initially during contact with Equestria, it was eventually resolved to a peaceful conclusion. While Queen Vespa welcomes all ponies to visit or live within the hive, some famished changelings that disagreed with this change retreated to the wilds.

Cloudsdale: About 70 years ago, Storm Creatures strengthened by Wild Magic stole Cloudsdale and enslaved its inhabitants. Just over a decade ago the enslaved ponies escaped, but struggled in the wilds, fearing no help awaited them in Equestria. Eventually they felt they had no choice but to attempt a raid on Ponyville. While unsuccessful, it brought to light the turmoil the ponies had faced and they were met with mercy. Though their actions had consequences, Cloudsdale now resides North of Ponyville. Storm ponies here now help to adjust the weather for better farming to the South, allowing Cloudsdale to slowly gain peaceful self-reliance.

Rorrim Lake: An isolated lake and village in the wilds, the population here eventually thought the village would die with its elderly residents. Wild Magic had taken hold of one of the trees there, however, and allowed the villagers to produce magical offspring to continue their legacy. Wild Magic within the trees around this lake seem to protect the area from danger.

Tips for Playing in the World of Tales from Equestria

    • While the story and world are based on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, enough time has passed that no one from the show would still be alive except for Alicorns and Dracoequus. Enough time has passed that the events of the show are likely legend to some degree and may not be accurately remembered by all.
    • Society has advanced from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but not as much as you might except due to setbacks caused by Wild Magic. Think of the technology as being sort of "magic-punk". Much of society runs on magic or magic-infused items. They may not have television or cellphones, but they may have other means of entertainment or communication that fill a similar role using magical means.
    • You can interact with the danger of the world as much or as little as you wish. Plenty of ponies will live in safe areas such as Canterlot or Ponyville and never really experience the peril of Wild Magic. How much of an influence this new world has on your character's everyday life is up to you!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can my character be related to a canon character from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic?

We are currently not allowing this, if only because we don't want people to conflict with one another in their histories and end up arguing/fighting over it. You are welcome to have your character related to clans or broader groups of ponies, though.

What if I want my character to be really powerful/have really good stats and abilities when I bring them in?

You can do this, but you'd need to do the art for them to level them up appropriately ahead of time. This is essentially like doing "backstory" work to get your character to where you want them to be. But there is no direct short-cut to leveling up characters.

Can I do art/writing of other player characters or NPCs to earn Progress Points and Horseshoes?

Absolutely! You may always do pieces of NPCs. To feature another player's character, make sure you ask permission first.

I'm stuck on what colors to use with my Random Color Hex Code color, please help!

This website is an excellent tool to help if you're stuck! It lets you put in a coor and generate a variety of palettes based upon it!

I hate the color the generator gave me!

Fear not! You have to use the color somewhere in the design, but it doesn't have to be the main color. Use it in a small spot if you really don't like it.

    Submission Types

There are many ways to interact with the world of Tales from Equestria. The primary means is through art submissions and can be done in the following situations.

    Event Submissions

These are pieces that fit the main group event, which changes bi-monthly. These events sometimes require stat rolls and sometimes award special prizes or bonus currency.

All event submissions receive an extra 20 PP and HS when completed in the active month. Event submissions for old events can still be made, but will only receive a 10 PP and HS bonus.

    Development Prompt Submissions

These prompts encourage you to develop your character and you will receive bonus Horsehoes and Progression Points. These can be completed once per character.

All development prompt submissions receive an extra 10 PP and HS.

    Meme Submissions

Sometimes the group posts templates based around a theme, idea, or question. These templates can be completed at any time and will receive bonus Horseshoes and Progression Points. These can be completed once per character. All available memes are listed below.

These prompts typically involve stat rolls and frequently award bonus currencies or items.

    Random Encounter Submissions

Sometimes an admin will comment on a submission offering a Random Encounter. These prompts often encourage you to develop a character or event further based on the submission the Random Event occured in. These can award bonus currencies, items, or even characters.

    Personal Submissions

These are submissions that are not tied to any other type of submission. These only earn currencies at the given rate, but can still experience Random Encounters.

    Other Creator Submissions

  • Group Currencies

    Group Currencies

There are multiple currencies in Tales from Equestria, but only one is used by the characters within the world. All other currencies are used to help structure and progress the game.

    Horseshoes (HS)

Horseshoes (HS) are the modern currency in Equestria. When Wild Magic first surged, there was a panic and Bits became scarce. Ponies resorted to direct bartering during the tough times, with the running joke being that if a pony really wanted something they would “even trade their horseshoes”. When the reigning Princess Sun Break started to piece society back together, Bits were done away with due to confusion with old counterfeits and a shortage of the physical coins. Horse Shoes were minted and slowly worked into the economy as a replacement.

Horseshoes are used to purchase basic items and unlockables within the group. These are earned through submissions and events. They can be traded between characters.

Horseshoes are awarded at the following rates:

Headshot: 5 HS x characters depicted

Halfbody: 10 HS x characters depicted

Fullbody: 15 HS x characters depicted

    Sketch: 2 HS

    Lineart: 5 HS

    Color: 10 HS

    Shading: 10 HS

    Simple Background: 5 HS

    Complex Background: 15 HS

    Comic Panel: 5 HS

    Animation: 15 HS

    Painted: 10 HS

Prose: 1 HS per 20 words.

Admin use a calculator and award Horseshoes upon submission.

    Progression Points (PP)

Progression Points (PP) are acquired by both characters and players alike. These points are used to unlock levels for characters and players, which in turn unlocks special abilities, items, and additional content. These are earned through submissions. These cannot be traded among characters and players.

Progression Points are awarded at the following rates for players:

Headshot: 5 PP x characters depicted

Halfbody: 10 PP x characters depicted

Fullbody: 15 PP x characters depicted

    Sketch: 2 PP

    Complex Background: 15 PP

    Comic Panel: 5 PP

    Animation: 15 PP

    Painted: 10 PP

Prose: 1 PP per 20 words

Progression Points are awarded at the following rates for characters:

    Headshot: 5 PP

    Halfbody: 10 PP

    Fullbody: 15 PP

    Sketch: 2 PP

    Lineart: 5 PP

    Complex Background: 15 PP

    Comic Panel: 5 PP

    Animation: 15 PP

    Painted: 10 PP

Prose: 1 PP per 20 words

Please note that characters only receive PP for their own depiction, not for any additional characters depicted in a submission.

Admin use a calculator and award Progression Points upon submission.

Order Points (OP) and Chaos Points (CP)

Characters earn Order Points (OP) and Chaos Points (CP) sometimes through submissions and events. It is not entirely clear what they are for at the moment…there are rumors they could be associated with some type of transformation, but no one seems to know for sure. These cannot be traded between characters.

Genetic Profiles: Markings, Characteristics, and Mutations

Every character in Tales from Equestria has a list of markings, characteristics, and mutations known as a genetic profile. This serves two functions: providing guidance for the design of randomly generated characters and providing a basis for heritable qualities in breeding. Some of these are general and can be found on any species, while others are specific to certain species and hybrids.

Markings determine how a character's colors are arranged on their body.

Characteristics determine common physical features on the body.

Mutations are rare, unusual changes in genetics that make a character have a very unusual trait of some kind. These can affect anything from colors, patterns, physical features, even body parts.

    Markings

Markings are the color patterns born on Equestrian creatures. Some markings are so common any creature can have them, while others are based on rolled genetics. Unless specified, markings can be put anywhere on the body, including wings, tails, and horns.

    Common Markings

Common markings are those that you can use freely in any design. They are never rolled in a character’s genetics, because they are always available for use! You may use as few or as many as you wish.

Blaze: Your character has a marking on their forehead! This can go as high as the top of the head down to the tip of the nose. It can be any shape or size, but must remain on the nose and central forehead.

Ears: Your character has markings on their ears! These can be any shape or size. They can be on the inside or outside of the ear, or both!

Eyeshadow: Your character has a marking around their eyes! This can be any shape, but cannot go far below the eye or above the eyebrows.

Fade: Your character has a part of the body that fades from one color to another. It cannot make any shape or pattern, but can be used anywhere to create a large gradient on any part of the body.

Freckles: Your character has small spots across their nose and cheeks.

Horn: Your character’s horn or horns are a different color than their base color.

Muzzle: Your character has a marking on their muzzle! It can be any shape or size. This can go halfway up the nose, but not onto the cheeks or forehead.

Underbelly: Your character has a marking on the underside of the neck, belly, or even the inside of the upper leg. This can be any shape or size.

Whole Wing: Your character’s wings have a different color than their base color.

    Genetic Markings

These markings are only found on your creature if their genetic profile dictates they have these markings. Just because a genetic profile has these markings listed doesn’t mean they have to be shown in the character, but it does mean they can pass on those markings to their offspring.

Brindle: Your character has very small, stippled looking markings in their coat.

Mask: Your character has a marking that covers some or all of their face! This can be any size or shape.

Patchy: Your character has markings that make big, patchy blotches of color, a bit like a cow! They can have defined or spotty edges.

Skunk: Your character has a marking that runs from the back of their head down their back. It can be any shape or size. It may go onto the tail if desired. It may not go down past the midsection of the character's side.

Socks: Your character has one or more markings that look like socks! They can go as far up the leg as desired. They can make some shapes as patterns, as long as they are still mostly sock-like.

Spots: Your character has spots on their body! They can be any shape, size, or number.

Streaks: Your character has long markings along the body, a bit like horizontal stripes. They can run anywhere from nose to tail, and be any shape or size.

Stripes: Your character has stripes on their body! These can be any size, shape, or number.

Symbol: Your character has markings that look a bit like deliberate designs or pictures! They can be soft, hard, or anything in-between. They can make patterns, pictures, and shapes if desired.

Tear: Your character has a marking that goes from the eye down the face. It may be any shape or size, and may have multiple parts.

    Species Specific Markings

These are markings only found in certain species, usually because they apply to species-specific features.

Eyespots [Pegasus, Bat Pony]: These are markings on the wings that mimic the appearace of eyes. They can be any eye-like shape and can use any number of colors.

Wing Outlines [Pegasus, Bat Pony, Changeling]: These markings outline the shape of the wings. They can be any design or shape, as long as they remain on the outline of the wing.

    Characteristics

Characteristics are physical traits that distinguish one character from another! These are completely determined by genetics. Just because a character has the genetics for a characteristic doesn’t mean it has to be seen. It would, however, still have the possibility of passing on to offspring.

    General Characteristics

General characteristics can be found on most species.

Feathering: This is when equines have what boils down to "fluffy feet". It includes longer fur near the hooves at the bottom of the feet.

Natural Horns: These are 1-6 horns made of kertin. They have no branches like antlers do, but can be in a wide variety of shapes. They are only found on the face. They provide no magical abilities.

Folded Ears: This is when one or more of the creature's ears are folded due to weaker cartilage. This can be a partial fold or a complete downward drop.

Whip Tail: This is when the tale is no longer composed of a mane, but instead has the hair of the regular pelt of the creature. It is also longer than normal. It can be unadorned, like a grayhound tail, or can end in a spade or other feature. It cannot have a tuft of longer hair at the end.

    Species Specific Characteristics

These are physical traits that can only be found in certain species or hybrids.

Long Ears [Earth Pony, Bovine]: Your character has long ears like a donkey or zebra! The length does not affect the ability of the ears to stand up or flop down.

Ridge [Earth Pony]: Your character has an extension of their mane that runs all along their back. If your character has a non-standard tail, the hair may extend onto it, but does not have to.

Angora [Earth Pony]: Your character has a pelt that grows long and continuously. This makes them extra fluffy. They may also have curls in their pelt to give a wooly appearance or extremely long fur like found in afgan hounds.

Wild Tail [Earth Pony]: Your character has a short tail with pelt-length furth until the tip, which has long hair as in the mane. This tail resembles that of a donkey or zebra. It cannot be long like a lion's.

Unusual Horn [Unicorn]: Your character's horn is an unusual shape and/or length. Despite its shape, it is still only one, singular horn.

Cloven Hooves [Unicorn]: Your character has hooves composed of two toes instead of one!

Lion's Tail [Unicorn]: Your character has a long tail that is pelt-length and tipped with a tuft of hair like that of the mane. This tail is flexible and cannot be extremely short.

Crested Tail [Unicorn]: Your character has a long tail that is mostly pelt-length with a crest of mane running down the back, culminating in a tuft at the end. This tail is flexible and cannot be extremely short.

Long Feathers [Pegasus]: Your character has feathers that are longer than normal. This can affect select feathers or all of them.

Large Wings [Pegasus, Bat Pony]: Your character's wings are excessively large.

Mini Wings [Pegasus, Bat Pony]: Your character's wings are excessively tiny.

Facial Feathers [Pegasus]: Your character has feathers on their head or face! These feathers cannot be extremely long without the Long Feathers characteristic.

Tail Feathers [Pegasus]: Your character has tail feathers! These can replace the regular tail or be in addition to it. They cannot be very long unless the creature also has the long feather characteristic.

Winged Ears [Pegasus, Bat Pony]: Your character has wings instead of ears! They can take on all the characteristics of traditional wings.

Bat Ears [Bat Pony]: Your character has ears like a bat! These can be like the fluffy bat ears depicted in MLP:FiM or can be more like real-life bat ears.

Bat Nose [Bat Pony]: Your character has a nose shape like those of a bat! It can have all sorts of odd cartilage shapes based on bats.

Fangs [Bat Pony]: Your character has elongated canines! This is common in bats who eat fruit, insects, or drink blood.

Unusual Wing Membrane [Bat Pony, Changeling]: Your character has wing membranes that are shaped a bit...differently. This may include extensions to the membranes or even missing sections.

Dragonfly Wings [Changeling]: Each wing your character has is made of two long, rounded membranes making them resemble that of a dragonfly!

Butterfly Wings [Changeling]: Each wing your character has is made of two wide, decorative membranes making them resemble that of a butterfly or moth!

Wingless [Changeling]: Your character was born without wings! They may or may not have the associated shell as well.

Unusual Shell [Changeling]: Your character has an unusually shaped shell on their back.

Antenna [Changeling]: Your character has a pair of antennas on their forehead. These may be smooth or fuzzy.

Mandibles [Changeling]: Your character has visible mandibles attached to their mouth. These mouth appendages may be any shape or size as long as they are insect-like.

Pronged Horns [Changeling]: Your character has a pair of pronged horns. They must have at least 2 prongs on each horn.

Stinging Tail [Changeling]: Your character has a segmented tail that ends in a stinger. The tail must have two segments with a stinger at the end.

Bug Toes [Changeling]: Your character has bug-like toes or claws instead of hooves. They may be any shape or size, but must resemble those of an insect.

Plated [Changeling]: Your character has extra plates of chitin and/or shell on their bodies. These plates can be any shape or size, but must not resemble fish or lizard scales.

Thorax Tail [Changeling]: Your character has a tail that resembles a large insect thorax. It may have any number of segments.

Spines [Changeling]: Your character has extra spines on their body. These can be in any location except the head and face.

Fuzzy [Changeling]: Your character has parts of their body that have fuzzy fur, quite unusual for a changeling! The fur can be short to medium in length.

Hornless [Bovine]: Your character is missing the species characteristic horns!

Long Horns [Bovine]: Your character has much longer horns then normal.

Unusual Horns [Bovine]: Your character has horns that differ from the standard straight or slightly curved horns.

Hump [Bovine]: Your character has a muscular hump on their back!

Shaggy Coat [Bovine]: Your character has a coat with longer hair! This can be curly, straight, or anything inbetween!

    Mutations

Mutations are rare changes in a character's genetics that give them unusual traits. These often defy what is natural or normal for a species and override existing rules of design. They are not species specific.

Additional Eyes: Your character has at least one additional eye, but can have as many additional eye as desired. They can be anywhere on the body.

Additional Wings: Your character has additional wings. This adds wings to parts of the body, it does not replace limbs or physical features with wings. The wings can be placed anywhere.

Hairless: Your character has bare skin on all or part of their body! Think of sphinx cats or chinese crested dogs for reference.

Long Teeth: Your character has some longer than normal teeth. They can be blunt or sharp, upper or lower.

Shine: Your character has some markings with a metalic shine to them.

Glitter: Your character has some markings that sparkle or glitter. This can be star-like or more glitter-like as desired.

Albinism: Your character is an albino! Their eyes are pink and their colors can only be composed of whites and extremely light yellows and pinks. Their eyes and skin are very sensitive to sunlight.

Melanism: Your character has melanistic colors. This means your character's design may only use blacks, grays, dark browns, and extremely dark blues and purples.

Piebaldism: Your character has piebaldism, meaning that parts of their body do not produce melatonin and appear white! This creates white patche on the body among the normal colors.

Chimera: Your character has an additional genetic profile! Parts of the body use one profile, while the rest uses the other. Distribution of the genetic profiles does not need to be even and does not need to be down the middle of the character.

Glow: Your character has parts of their body that glow with bioluminescence!

Gemstone: Your character has some characteristics shared with gemstones! Their hooves and eyes can have the texture of precious gems. Optionally, they can have the "crystal" texture as seen in MLP:FiM. They cannot have literal gems or crystals growing on them or in place of horns.

Additional Limbs: Your character has more limbs than usual! These limbs must fit what is normal for your charactr's species and genetic profile. These limbs cannot be wings!

    Species of Equestria

Equestria and the lands beyond its borders are filled with many species. While the Age of Princesses saw a surge in diversity across the realm, the rise of Wild Magic nearly erased this progress. Below are the species that are commonly found in Equestria currently. As the wilds are reclaimed, Equestrians may reunite with other species once again.

Species Rarity determines when certain species are accessable to players and also represents how likely you are to find such species among the population in Equestria. Rarity tiers are unlocked when players level up.

Common Rarity - Available to All

Earth Ponies: These are horse-like equines, including zebra and donkey lineages. While orgininally zebras and donkeys were thought of as separate species, they became widely intermixed with other Earth Ponies over the past hundreds of years, so much so that their traits can be found commonly among Earth Ponies to this day.

Pegasus Ponies: These are horse-like equines with feathered wings capable of flight. Traditionally helped shape the weather in Equestria.

Unicorn Ponies: These are horse-like equines with magic horns on their foreheads. They are the primary users of Traditional Magic.

    Uncommon Rarity - Unlockable

Bat Ponies: These are horse-like equines with bat wings. Some of these ponies have other bat-like features as well. The diet if bat ponies is highly variable. Some rely heavily on fruit, some are omnivorous, some favor insects, and others even drink blood. Most bat ponies in equestria are either desended from Luna's personal guard or come from families in Sumit's Hollow.

Changeling: This species has the appearance of a cross between an equine and an insect. The typical pureblood changeling has a single pair of oval-shaped insect wings that can fold under a protective shell, a tail that resembles a wing or no tail at all, and frequently a beetle-like horn on their forehead. Changelings have been interbreeding with other species for a long time, however, making pony-like hair and tails far more common. When Wild Magic flared for the first time, all changelings were called back to the hive. Those that refused the call hid themselves in equestrian society using their shapeshifting abilities. Old stories tell of a time when Changelings were dark, fierce, and riddled with holes with a hunger like a deadly disease, but most believe these to be simple folklore.

    Rare Rarity - Unlockable

Bovines: These include cows, bison, and yaks! They have a standard straight or slightly curved set of horns, short tails with tufted ends, plus cloven hooves. Dewlaps and udders (females only) are optional. These live in a variety of areas including Yakyakistan and Appleloosa.

    Using Stats

Stats matter in Tales from Equestria! When taking part in certain events, making certain submissions, or answering certain prompts, an admin may need to roll a stat check. This will determine the outcome of that situation. The roll needed to pass will depend on how "difficult" the task is or what the stats of an opponent may be.

For example, if your task is moving a boulder, an admin may roll a stat check on your characer's STR. If the boulder only requires a 5 to pass, and your character has a STR of 15, the admin will roll a random number between 1-15. As long as the number is 5 or greater, the boulder is moved.

Please note that this is different than the typical D&D use of stats. This has been changed to streamline the process and make things more clear-cut on how stats impact performance.

    History of Equestria

    Government History

A very long time ago, Twilight Sparkle, the Princess of Friendship, ruled over Equestria. With the help of her friends, who wielded the powers of the Elements of Harmony, she ruled wisely. Realizing the success of her rule was the direct result of her friends’ aid, she formally established the Council of Friendship, so that no ruler would ever have to face challenges alone. To this day all Princesses have a Council of Friendship to advise them on all decisions of the realm. All princesses train their successors before retiring. The whereabouts of retired Princesses are currently unknown, as all have disappeared from the public eye following the retirement of Princess Twilight Sparkle, bringing an end to the Age of Princesses.

    The Rise of Wild Magic

Partway through the reign of Princess Luster Dawn, changes began to creep into the corners of Equestria. Traditional areas of magic began to hum with life. Wilderness began to grow and spread with alarming speed. Within these wilds, creatures became more unpredictable and dangerous. They demonstrated new abilities and forms, posing new hazards for citizens across the realm. By the time this surge of "Wild Magic" was recognized as a substantial threat, it became impossible to contain. Small towns were destroyed or abandoned. Contact between many cities disappeared and much of the state of the world became unknown to most. The unease felt by Equestrians was only heighted when Princess Luster Dawn disappeared, leaving the realm to her successor, Princess Dawn Bringer. Some rumors say she retired in shame at her failure to protect Equestria, while others hope that she has gone to seek a solution for the Wild Magic crisis.

    Modern Equestria

Wild magic has eroded Equestria to a fraction of its former scope. With wild magic and the creatures imbued with it, much of the land became swallowed in chaos and peril.  One princess alone has not been enough to keep Equestria safe. The most recent Princess Dawn Bringer has struggled to use her magic efficiently. As a last resort she has pulled back official protection to Canterlot and Ponyville. Her own magic is used to directly protect Canterlot and keep danger outside the borders, while in Ponyville magicians at the School of Friendship maintain defenses there. Princess Dawn Bringer has tasked the Knight of Equestria and the Canterlot School of Sorcery with slowly reclaiming territory and seeking a more permanent solution.

    A Society Built on Magic

Wild magic wasn’t the only power in Equestria to grow. Traditional magic grew in strength among the unicorns, allowing for the integration of spells into everyday life. Enchantments gave magical properties and abilities to a wide array of devices, tools, and accessories, allowing even Earth and Pegasus ponies to take advantage of the advancements. Just as humans advanced around the industrial revolution, Equestria has advanced around magic and woven it into their technology and innovations. Very little in a typical pony life is done without the touch of magic.

    Traditional vs Wild Magic

Traditional magic (also known as true magic or institutatal magic) is magic performed by unicorns and alicorns through magic spells and incantations. A great amount of discipline and study is required for higher level traditional magic. A bit like language, simple spells can be picked up through observation, while complex magic must be studied.

Wild Magic (also known as natural magic or corrupted magic) is magic any individual can access by connecting with magic sources typically found in nature. Since any being can access this type of magic, even creatures with lower intelligence or sentience can be imbued with wild magic. Wild magic is channeled rather than controlled, making spells and scripts unnecessary.
