"While casting complex spells, the magier sometimes manifests animus (latin. soul), an idealized representation of the magierβs person or self image. A magierβs power can be gauged simply by looking at his animus. The clearer and more elaborate the animus, the more power he possesses." -- About Magier
Kamal al-Sa'ir's animus manifests in the form of a brilliant, fiery four-winged angel. Here in this picture, his animus is beginning to materialize as he performs a powerful magic spell. In full flare, the animus has a fiery aura, a burning sword, and is dotted with runes similar to Kamal's runes. I opted not to draw a full flare because it detracted from the character in the picture (Kamal) and put too much attention on the animus, which is the opposite effect I was trying to achieve. So, to shift the focus back to Kamal, I faded the angelic visage into the background.
This is NOT a summoning. Kamal detests magic that summons extraplanar entities and has never learned any spells to that effect. As mentioned above, it's a manifestation of his inner self. The reason he has an angelic animus will be revealed during the course of the manga.
