Chapter 18: providence.

The world Eliza lives in was built on a tragedy. As some might call it, “one evil for a dozen good.” In this world, there is a book. This book was once a stone carving that was once a pottery painting that was once a wall drawing that was once a tale spread from ear to ear.

Now, it is a book. Translated by a person so narratively insignificant that the book’s author remains nameless.

Providence was a superior being. Too powerful for his own form to let anything else live. This is his story.

There is another with many names. Some know her as “Mother Nature” as she is the reason for their existence. Others simply call her “the ground” or “Gaia.” But in this particular story, seeing as this is the story of Providence, she is known as “The Lover.”

Why she lives in the presence of Providence remains unanswered, but according to the beliefs of many—as it goes unmentioned in the book— The Lover came first, and then, so was Providence.

They found themselves in a rhythmic battle against the other, dancing to a melody distinct to each. As their practice went on, they found themselves drawn to their company. To their horror—but alas, for the best—their melodies unified into a single song that only they would share, and they fell in love.

Providence was wise and spiritual, The Lover was hearty and grounded. They loved each other more than they could give, so eventually, one had to take.

The Lover wanted more. More to see, more to cherish. But with Providence, nothing besides her and her barren plight would be allowed to manifest. She begged and pleaded, but Providence was indifferent. He was content with what he had with her.

No time was present at that time, so it’s difficult to know when. But assume one night, The Lover invited him to a dance to the only song they knew. Whether a spear, an arrow, a sword, or a dagger, she stabbed Providence in his heart.

Just as suddenly, her desolate grounds began to sprout with flora, stars illuminated the sky, and mortals made of clay began to rise from regions flooded in water.

Providence is wise. They say that every outcome is determined by him. Others will argue that he didn’t predict The Lover’s betrayal, to which the response might be something along the lines of sacrifice. So she will live on forever with the memory of him and her choices.

As for The Lover, she keeps her name even after his death because this is the story of Providence, and in his story, his heart, though pierced, still beats for her.

She is left in a dormant state of grief. In the dead of silence, she listens closely for the song that, now, only she knows.

"The Dagger fell to the floor along with The Mother's tears. As she wept into her palms, streams of rivers and oceans and lakes formed as forests took root, and man arose from clay. Upon opening their eyes to see her sobbing, the birds, the fish, the men, and the stars grieved along with her. As an offering of pity, the stars gave her a blazing inferno to warm her heart and dry her tears."

-excerpt from "The Tragedy of Providence."

(something from my popcorn notebook. this is canon to the main story. i think.)
