Chapter 23: the call of godspawn. IX

There was a spar between the two. The godspawn eventually found enough common sense to regain her dual swords while Eliza was left with a lack of one. The trees around her began to tumble as the girl sliced them clean, reminding the duchess that given the opportunity, the ghost would turn her into sushi. Eliza paraded her around the house, unsure if the girl would follow her back to Raventown. She decided that it was better not to find out.

Between the heat of battle, Eliza narrowly missed another attack, slicing open a wound in her gloveless arm, nearly dropping her stone. The godspawn’s arms were stuck within the ground again. She struggled to get them out while keeping her gaze on the duchess. Eliza took the opportunity to slip through into the forest where she kept to the blind eyes of the thicket.

She took a stick and, to the best of her knowledge, began to draw alchemy symbols. First a circle, the basis of everything. Then, four symbols—like the runes in the cave and on Vector’s chalkboards—were drawn within the circle, their angles sticking a little outside. One to represent each of the latent elements: earth, fire, water, and sky.

Somewhere in the distance, a monster let out a shriek of fury. Eliza began to panic. She tried to connect the circle with three smaller circles, unsure of what else to do. She drew a moon to represent the moonless sky, she drew the symbol for death despite previously being warned not to experiment with such properties before, and she drew the symbol for amalgamation because her assortment of arms reminded her of a doll with pieces sewn together. Eliza was honestly bidding on luck for this to all work out. The instructions were pretty vague on what she was supposed to draw so she had to make something up.

“There you are, Lowery.” A thousand voices rang through the forest as the girl arose from behind her. Laughter, screaming, sobbing, and chanting escaped the girl’s throat as she looked maniacally at her. Eliza allowed her bloodied glove to fall to the ground on top of her ritual.

One final, toothy smile, and the girl lunged at her at full speed.

    This is wonderful!!
These lines are just perfect: "A thousand voices rang through the forest as the girl arose from behind her. Laughter, screaming, sobbing, and chanting escaped the girl’s throat as she looked maniacally at her."
