Chapter 5: eye of the storm. I

Eliza wasn’t one for giving, but she made the very unintentional mistake of upsetting one of her deadweight companions.

Darling Cyn-Derstorm was not one for forgiveness, but inconveniently, she also had Eliza’s junket trunk back to her supply of riches. Sorry— loving and appreciative family. So she took a page out of Raventown’s book and sent the bird… thing to send word to purchase a gift. Today was a sad day for her.

To be truthfully honest, she had no idea what Darling would appreciate. She assumed a pack of beer would be enough to call it a day, but for one odd reason or whatever, the raven came back with a note attached to its leg, a look of guilt, sorrow, and shame in its eyes. She could’ve sworn a tear ran down his face.

Perhaps she should’ve inspected the seller first, but for whatever reason the raven could not deliver it to her. This issue concerned her, and she decided on just getting her drunk enough to steal it under her nose. Though it sounded like a wonderful plan, the seller did just take the last of her money, and the bird was now aggressively CAWW-ing in her ear whilst nipping at her hair.

With the bird leading the way to the caretaker, she hovered her hand over the latent stone in her pocket. Darling better appreciate the beer. She’s not telling her what she did to get it. The raven gave a loud caw, impatiently telling her to hurry up. If things did go south, maybe she could present a peace offering in the form of a freshly cooked bird.

The man wrapped in rigid, dusty covering showed only his face to her. Even then, all she could see behind the shadows were two whites of eyes.

“Hello, Lowery,” the man said, voice low and raspy, as if he had not spoken for decades. Eliza stiffened. She did not give her name in the letter she sent. He chuckled in response. “Worried aren’t you? Restless it seems as well.” He extended a pale, boney hand outward. A package wrapped in silver tin was extended from his hand.

This man was clearly something strange. Something curiously odd, radiating a powerful aura. Something not her business, so she extended her hand and quickly grabbed it from him. She’ll leave the investigation to someone else. “Closely I have watched you— hey, where are you going?” She turned her heel and speed walked away from him. “DON’T YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO I AM?!” He hollered at her. “A PROSTITUTE?” She guessed and ran off with the gift, the raven trailing behind.
