Chapter 23: Varick and Silvyr Perform a Lullaby

Varick slid down the snowy hill on his back while silently cursing. Luckily the mahogany Clydesdale’s clothes were enchanted to protect them from the cold and tearing. Unluckily, however, he collided with someone else and tumbled head over hoof.

β€œSorry, my bad,” Varick quickly apologized as he righted himself. He reached his hand out to help the person he collided with to see a rainbow-haired elf on the ground. β€œOh, it’s you, Silver. Thought I heard a child shrieking.”

β€œVarick,” the elf snarled as he pushed the horse’s offered hand aside to stand alone. β€œWould explain why I heard someone torturing a cat earlier.” The two locked eyes briefly as it looked like fists were about to fly.

β€œThis is probably the point where we are supposed to hug and say hey, how you are doing but-” As if on cue, the crystal wyrm roared, interrupting Varick. β€œI have an idea to lull it to sleep, but we need to do a brief reunion tour to make it happen.”

β€œYou know I’ll take any excuse to perform,” Silver laughed as he swept his multicolored locks back into place. Varick pulled his violin out of his bag with a smile. The plan was simple. They just used the noise-amplifying properties of the crystals to lull the beast to sleep with their combined harmony.

Varick and Silvyr raced down the mountain to get ahead of the crystalline serpent dragon. The half-elf took to the air and spotted an area with the perfect arrangement of crystals. Usually, Varick hated to fly, but this was an emergency, so the horse let Silvyr carry him to their impromptu stage. Once on land again, with violin in hand, the horse tailor began to play an old lullaby from his birth planet, Requinest. Notes filled the air from the string instrument as Silvyr summoned his microphone. The song didn’t have lyrics traditionally, but the elf diva improvised a whole lullaby on the spot. Soon the wyrm menace was asleep, surrounded by the brilliant crystals of the mountainside, ready to be hauled away by the Guild.
