Chapter 48: Duo Cast Kaytlyn and Keys

Kaytlyn managed to beat the traffic and get home in time. She needed to decorate before Vondell got there for his surprise. Hopefully, the help she hired to reach all the high-up places arrived on time. As the young fennec was fretting, there was a knock on the door.

β€œOh, this isn’t-,” the brown-haired human started to say, only to be cut off mid-sentence.

β€œYes, come in! I am Kaytlyn, the one who hired you,” the fox explained as she pulled the man inside. β€œThere’s a box of decorations on the table. Put them up and then I’ll pay you.”

β€œI’m Keys, but I’m not-” the one-eyed human tried to protest but stopped when the fennec girl disappeared into the kitchen.

He shrugged and decided the coin would be worth the small effort to decorate. The box on the counter is full of different holiday ornaments and lights, including a life-size cape penguin in a Santa hat. It was an odd decoration, but Keys put it on a side table. After setting out a few other things, the festive bird was back in the box. Looking at the table the scarred human had put it on, he found it no longer there. Maybe he only thought he put it out. With a sigh, Keys put the penguin back out and set about putting up lights. Moments later, the water bird was back in the box.

β€œEverything going good out here,” Kaytlyn asks as she returns from the kitchen with a plate of cookies.

β€œI think your penguin doll is haunted,” Keys answered, looking a bit wearily at the bird in the box.

β€œOh, that’s just Franz,” the fennec smiled, handing the man the plate and picking up the bird. β€œSome times he can be a bit silly.”

β€œHe kept putting me in the wrong spot,” the penguin said in a posh accent.

β€œIt can talk,” Keys exclaimed, confused, backing towards the door.

β€œOf course, he’s a talisman after all,” Kaytlyn laughed, holding Franz up. Suddenly, the monocular man decided this madness wasn’t worth it and fled with his plate of cookies. β€œGuess he didn’t want the gold after all.”
