Chapter 33: Varick and Tanner Create A Shelter in the Storm

Varick watched in horror as the crystal wyrm reared back, unleashing a mighty roar. Crystals began to rain from the sky as the serpent dragon unleashed in full fury toward the mahogany Clydesdale. A quick check told the tailor that his throwing needles were dangerously low. A cave nearby offered shelter, but a cry from across the powdered quartz landscape caught Varick’s attention. Crystals threatened to squash a ginger dryad caught in the path of the fury.

β€œGet down,” Varick shouted as he ran across the field. Needles flew from his hands as the blonde horse ran. Green threaded needles sought out and destroyed smaller chunks, while ones with brown threads impacted larger pieces with the force of a brick. β€œHi, I’m Varick, and if we are going to survive this crystal storm, we must work together. What’s your element?”

β€œTanner and earth,” the dryad timidly answered, still scared of the falling crystals. A brief lull in the storm gave the opportunity Varick needed. Red threaded needles hit the ground around the two as the Clydesdale expended the last of his weapons.

β€œHold this while I tie them all together,” Varick instructed as he tossed Tanner a spool of red thread. Quickly the tailor tied all the needles to each other before cutting the line. β€œHit it with your magic!”

Tanner hesitated momentarily, but a crystal landed nearby to frighten him into action. As the earth magic from the dryad hit the fire magic in the thread, a metallic igloo sprung up around the duo. Crystals bounced off the metal, making loud noises that frightened Tanner. Varick stood firm with his hand on the wall holding the magic together.

β€œIs this thing going to hold,” the red-haired dryad asked, concerned about their safety.

β€œIf it doesn’t, we just have to run as fast as we can,” Varick laughed off the question before seeing the concern in his companion’s eyes. β€œBut seriously, we’ll be fine. Just ride this out for a bit, then we’ll get you off this mountain.”
