Chapter 25: Varick and Fo Make A Fence

Varick ran full tilt down the snow slope towards the crystal trees carrying his blue volai, Layla. Behind them was an entire herd of other volai, and behind the deer-like creatures was the destructive crystal wyrm. The crystal trees wouldn’t be the best shelter, but they at least created a defensible line. A purple humanoid with white hair appeared in the direct path of Varick. The Clydesdale skidded to a stop, thudding his side hard into a tree as the stampeding volai thundered past.

β€œSo you lead stampedes of volai through here often, or is this a first for you,” a voice flirtatiously called from the tree above Varick. The horse saw a purple humanoid with white hair and eyes clinging to the crystalline branches. β€œMy name is Fo, and I have been looking for a cardio partn-”

β€œVarick and flirt later! What’s your element,” the brown horse demanded as he set Layla down before he began to loosen thread lengths from the spool.

β€œFire,” Fo responded as he climbed down from the tree, curious about what Varick was doing. The horse tailor threw him a second spool and pointed to the crystal trees.

β€œSpider-web it through the trees, and when complete, hit it with as much fire as you can. It’s an earth-powered spell thread, so it should form a strong barrier,” Varick instructed as he had already started tying the thread to trees.

Working together, the duo managed to entwine the crystal trees with a webwork of thread. On Varick’s signal, Fo used his lyre to send an inferno of flames into the spell threads. As planned, the lines turned into a barrier made of metal just in time for the crystal wyrm to bounce off it. With the volai saved, Varick slumped down against a crystal tree.

β€œSo, time to flirt now,” Fo asked with a wink.

β€œSorry, I’m seeing someone,” Varick responded as he fished a flask out of his bag. He took a long drink from it before finding Layla. β€œMaybe next time.”
