Chapter 25: Varick and Fo Make A Fence
Varick ran full tilt down the snow slope towards the crystal trees carrying his blue volai, Layla. Behind them was an entire herd of other volai, and behind the deer-like creatures was the destructive crystal wyrm. The crystal trees wouldnβt be the best shelter, but they at least created a defensible line. A purple humanoid with white hair appeared in the direct path of Varick. The Clydesdale skidded to a stop, thudding his side hard into a tree as the stampeding volai thundered past.
βSo you lead stampedes of volai through here often, or is this a first for you,β a voice flirtatiously called from the tree above Varick. The horse saw a purple humanoid with white hair and eyes clinging to the crystalline branches. βMy name is Fo, and I have been looking for a cardio partn-β
βVarick and flirt later! Whatβs your element,β the brown horse demanded as he set Layla down before he began to loosen thread lengths from the spool.
βFire,β Fo responded as he climbed down from the tree, curious about what Varick was doing. The horse tailor threw him a second spool and pointed to the crystal trees.
βSpider-web it through the trees, and when complete, hit it with as much fire as you can. Itβs an earth-powered spell thread, so it should form a strong barrier,β Varick instructed as he had already started tying the thread to trees.
Working together, the duo managed to entwine the crystal trees with a webwork of thread. On Varickβs signal, Fo used his lyre to send an inferno of flames into the spell threads. As planned, the lines turned into a barrier made of metal just in time for the crystal wyrm to bounce off it. With the volai saved, Varick slumped down against a crystal tree.
βSo, time to flirt now,β Fo asked with a wink.
βSorry, Iβm seeing someone,β Varick responded as he fished a flask out of his bag. He took a long drink from it before finding Layla. βMaybe next time.β
