Chapter 32: Varick Uses Dee As A Model

Varick paced back and forward nervously. The beach fashion show was underway, and his last model had dropped out. Usually, the mahogany Clydesdale would fill in himself, but he needed to ensure his other models got down the runway. A raven had been dispatched to the guild asking anyone willing to fill in to come quickly. There was a commotion backstage as a white-skinned large-nosed man appeared.

β€œDee,” Varick asked, confused by the shapeshifter’s sudden appearance. β€œWhat are you doing here?”

β€œA squawking raven at the guild said you need help,” Dee answered while casting a curious eye around the backstage area. β€œIs there some mystery you need me to solve? A model stealing from the cash box?”

β€œNo, nothing like that,” Varick shook his head as he pulled a dress from a rack. It was a white floor-length tulle wedding dress beaded with crystals from Starsong Mountain. The beading was heavier across the chest and waist to protect the wearer’s modesty. β€œCongrats, you’re a model now. There’s a curtained stall for you to change.” Dee took the dress into the stall and emerged moments later wearing the garment that had magically resized to fit him perfectly.

β€œNot the first dress I’ve worn, but is it singing,” the older man asked as the music seemed to emanate from the dress with every step. Varick pushed his new model towards the curtain as it was almost his time to walk.

β€œI’ve arranged the crystals so they’ll play β€œWedding March” as you walk,” the Clydesdale tailor quickly explained. β€œOn custom orders, I can do whatever song the wearer wants, but for now, just walk the runway showing off all your sides.” Being pushed onto the runway stifled any further questions from Dee. As the tailor had claimed, every step produced the notes of β€œWedding March.” Despite being unprepared to be a model, the older shapeshifter killed it and earned his fair share of whistles.
