Chapter 29: Varick Just Drinks Whatever Kyanoko Brews

Varick ran down the mountainside looking for stray adventurers or volai that hadn’t evacuated yet. So far, no one appeared stuck in the crystal wyrm’s destructive path. Suddenly smoke started billowing out from a cave downhill, and it looked like the serpentine dragon had also spotted it. Against his better judgment, Varick altered course and headed straight for the shelter. Diving through the smoke, the blonde Clydesdale found the source of smoke, a female tanuki.

β€œHi, Varick, and we need to go right now,” Varick quickly tells the raccoon dog girl. Surprised by the mahogany horse’s sudden arrival through the smoke, the girl recoils a bit.

β€œBut, that thing is out there! It might eat me,” the tanuki protests before remembering to introduce herself, β€œI’m Kyanoko.”  A roar outside from the crystal wyrm informed the duo that they were now too late to run.

β€œNew plan. I’ll distract it, and you run,” Varick ordered as he started to make needles appear between his fingers. Kyanoko pulled on the horse’s arm to stop him from leaving the cave.

β€œNo, don’t get hurt trying to save me. Save yourself instead,” the raccoon dog girl insisted with a look of fear and panic.

β€œI’ll be fine. I’ve fought things outside my weight class before,” the horse assures Kyanoko as he shakes her off his arm. The phrasing Varick used gave the terrified Tanuki an idea. Quickly she rustled through her pack, pulled out a flask, and shoved it into the horse’s hand. β€œA  little liquid courage never hurt.” In one swift motion, Varick drained the flask before rushing out of the cave.

β€œNo! You were only supposed to have a sip,” Kyanoko called after the Clydesdale, only for the words to fade against in the roar of the crystal wyrm.

Varick started to feel strange as they stepped out of the cave. Within moments he grew to gigantic proportions, with his skin becoming hardened. Confused but without time to question anything, the horse tailor drew his newly resized scissor from his sewing kit. A quick flick of a release mechanism split the cutting tool into two makeshift daggers. Using these weapons, Varick sliced up the dragon enough to drive it off for now and allow Kyanoko to run for safety.
