DoA - Drawlloween 2020: Area 52

Chapter 9: Area 52

"47... 48... 49... 50... 51... Ah, here we are! Area 52." Malachite declared firmly, nodding happily as he moved towards the entrance of the cave which had 52 etched into the rocks. Beside the entrance of the cave were several pairs of large kelp growing tall, gently swaying from side to side. Barnacles clung to the entrance of the cave, a few small other life forms running over the surface of both the rocks and the kelps leaf.

But that was a stark contrast to the cave. The inside of the cave seemed to be devoid of any form of light, the water almost carrying a stagnant, empty smell to it. He rumbled softly, a frown pulling onto his face as he tried to look a little deeper in.

He was told that it wasn't a fun place to go and visit, especially when there were so many rumours about these caves. But this one in particular always carried a sense of mystery, as if something was always being hidden deep within. However, what was hidden, no one knew as they couldn't stomach going much deeper than a few dozen feet.

Something always scared them away or made them turn back.

But what could possibly be so scary that it would even make Malachite run?

Confident, the dragon swam into the dark cave, pushing himself forward. The water quickly ran cold as he entered the deep cave, devoid of life, lacking any form of fish. The cold pulled at his scales, making him shudder slightly as the sensation almost felt as if it crawled across his emerald scales. It almost felt like something was watching him, even in the freezing cold water.

He paused for a few moments, eyes narrowing slightly more as he peered into the inky darkness.

Slowly he pulled himself to a halt as he continued to squint, trying to find something in there. He couldn't see anything, but he could have sworn that he could feel something in there. Shuddering again, he made his way forward once more, his sure confidence beginning to falter.

Was this not a good idea?

What if there actually was something in there?

What if Aqrions were its prey?

The three thoughts went through his mind and in just a few more moments, Malachite had turned around. He quickly swam out of the cave. It was better to live another day, and it wasn't as if he had to tell anyone else that he ran away from area 52!
